The Event: Cycle for Survival is an indoor team cycling relay in NYC and cities around the country on Sunday Jan 31, which is the Sunday before the Super Bowl when nothing else is typically going on. Last year’s Cycle for Survival raised more than $1.2 million for cancer research.    People “share” an indoor cycling bike for 4 hours and raise money for a great cause.  We get the best cycling instructors in NY to motivate people but you don’t need to have ever gotten on a bike before to have a great time and make a difference. There are activities for the whole family to enjoy.

The Cause: 100% of the funds raised through Cycle for Survival go directly towards clinical trials and research studies at one of the world’s leading institutions for cancer care - Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.  The research will particularly focus on less common cancers that don’t get the funding that they desperately require. These cancers alone don’t get much attention but when you group them together, they affect millions of people annually. To date, we have funded over 8 trials that have impacted brain, pancreative, soft-tissue, lymphoma and certain forms of pediatric cancer.

Jen’s Story: At the age of 33, Jen Goodman Linn was diagnosed with sarcoma, a rare form of cancer.  Over the last 5 years, she has endured 4 major surgeries and more than 26 months of chemotherapy.  Even while facing these challenges, Jen created Cycle for Survival to help the millions of people impacted by cancer.  Jen has been cancer-free for the past 5 months since her most recent surgery, but she is always worried that her cancer will return for a fifth time and is therefore committed to finding more treatment options for her and her fellow cancer patients.

We’ve launched!

After five months of hard work by our staff, consultants and volunteers, we are proud to announce the launch of our new interactive website.

Funded by a grant from NY State, the heart of the new site is our nifty and engaging LGBT cancer-education and screening program, Take Care of That Body, where you can:

1. Create and print a Personalized Cancer Risk Report

2. Find LGBT-friendly cancer screening sites, each including a Personal Contact to guide you through the process of setting up the appointment and ensuring your comfort and safety at the facility.

3. Sign up for electronic screening reminders (either email or text message) to remind you to schedule your next cancer screening appointment.

“New Stars for Young Stars,” Jan. 9 at Jillian’s Boston

BOSTON – Boston Red Sox players and up-and-coming minor leaguers will sign autographs to benefit the Jimmy Fund at the fifth annual “New Stars for Young Stars” event. New Stars for Young Stars will be held on Saturday, Jan. 9, from 11:15 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. at Jillian’s Boston.

The lineup includes: Red Sox Outfielder Josh Reddick, Red Sox Pitcher Manny Delcarmen, Red Sox Outfielder Jeremy Hermida, Ryan Westmoreland ranked #2 by SoxProspects.com, Red Sox 2009 “Minor League Player of the Year” Ryan Kalish, and Red Sox 2009 “Minor League Pitcher of the Year” Casey Kelly Former Red Sox great and 2004 World Series Champion Trot Nixon will also be take part in the event.

Tickets go on sale, Dec. 1, at www.jimmyfund.org/new-stars. . Two types of tickets are available. An MVP ticket at $250 includes an official MLB jersey, plus one of the first 30 spots in line. Regular admission tickets are $150 each. All ticket holders can bring one guest, but only the ticket holder may receive autographs. A buffet lunch will be served and sports memorabilia will be on sale. In addition, there will be an opportunity drawing, silent auction and bowling to help strike out cancer.

New Stars for Young Stars is hosted by the Jimmy Fund Council of Greater Boston and has quickly become a popular event for Red Sox fans, already having raised nearly $100,000 since its inception in 2006.

Founded in 1948, the Jimmy Fund is an official charity of the Boston Red Sox. It supports the fight against cancer at Boston’s Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, which is a leading cancer research and care center for adults and children, and a National Cancer Institute designated comprehensive cancer center.
